"My Mom called me a ho!"

"My Mom caught my BF and I making out the other night. Nothing scandalous happened at all, just your typical kiss-fest, but my Mom got all freaked out and called me a "slut." Turns out she found some birth control info I received at school the other day and decided that I was having sex (even though I�m NOT!) Now we�re not speaking and I�m grounded. Unbelievable. What should I do?"

We Say:
We totally understand what your Mom is doing here. She�s trying to look out for you, and doesn�t want to see you get hurt by something you might not be ready for. Got it. BUT, she�s doing it in a totally messed up way.

First of all, parents snooping in your room is a definite no-no. It breaks down trust between the two of you. Second, your Mom shouldn�t be viciously name-calling when you argue. You wouldn�t throw out words like that at her, and she should show you the same respect.

So, instead of freezing each other out for eternity, you need to take the higher ground here and start talking about what happened. Tell her you get two minutes to explain the situation, before she gets to speak, and that you�ll let her do the same once you�re done. That way you are forced to calm down and listen to each other. We�re sorry your Mom flipped out and hurt your feelings, but try to remember that parents are definitely not perfect sometimes.
