"To go from dark brunette to platinum or light blonde, we recommend you do that through a hair salon," Chuck says. "You have to remove your [darker] color with lightener, and your hair has to go through a red-orange stage before it actually turns blonde. One of the hardest things about doing at-home bleaching is that there's a fine line between a gold-yellow -- like the outside of a banana peel -- and pale yellow, the inside of a banana peel."

The problem? "You have to have a certain level of lightness for your toner to take -- so that you can be platinum-gold, platinum-strawberry, etc.," Chuck says. Yikes! Repeat: Leave the bleaching to professionals!
