Porcelain Veneers
The 411: Hilary Duff publicly admitted to getting new chompers because she kept chipping her real teeth on microphones during concerts.
How old do you have to be? "I don't like to veneer teeth until the age of 18," says Brian Kantor, D.D.S. "At a young age, the nerves [in teeth] are very large. For veneers, you have to reduce a portion of the tooth structure, and if you drill too far, it can cause extreme sensitivity and possible nerve damage."
A healthier alternative: "For someone under the age of 18, I prefer to do bonding -- a process of fusing a high density plastic onto the teeth," says Jeff Morley, D.D.S., spokesperson for the American Dental Association. Plus, according to Dr. Morley, if you have a skilled dentist, bonding will look just as good as veneers.
Average cost: According to Dr. Morley, veneers run anywhere between $1,200 and $2,500 per tooth. Bonding is $400 to $1,500 per tooth.
