He Changes Patterns

Does he always call you after school every other day, just to say "hi" and check in? A few missed calls here and there are nothing to worry about (c'mon, he's only human!). But if you start noticing that he's doing this a lot -- not calling when he says he will, not calling as often -- you might want to re-evaluate things. It could simply signify a shift in your relationship (which isn't necessarily bad). Like if he's always the one to do the calling and asking-out and you've been dating awhile, try calling him for once! However, if you sense he's losing interest, you should talk to him about it (or start becoming less available when he does call).
