The Seeds
So if we do some "simple" math, 64 teams are divided into 4 groups of 16 "seeds." A seed is slang for a ranking. The correct way to discuss seeds is to say something like "Because this team lost to that team, they are seeded at number 3." (No worries, there is no other gardening lingo to worry about.) These seeds determine what order the teams will play each other. The number 1 seed plays the number 16 seed, which means the lower ranked teams will theoretically have an uphill battle. When a lower ranked team does well and wins a lot, sportscasters and fans start calling that team "a Cinderella story." (Not the Hilary Duff movie!) Basically, everyone wants this to happen so the underdog wins. (Didn't we smile when Anne Hathaway became a princess?!)
