The Chosen Ones
Some teams are ranked by conference tournament victories, which means that those teams won other smaller tournaments (think: reality show challenges). The other 34 teams are chosen by "at-large" bids, which means that a selection committee (think: Simon and Paula) sits down and decides who they think is worthy of playing the game. It's like how Tim Gunn saw potential in Chris March and the producers asked him back for the finale. Then once 65 teams are in the mix, they need to whittle it down to only 64, which means one is going home. They fight it out in the "play-in" game (gosh, couldn't they think of a more creative name?) to decide who gets to play in the Madness.
